Drinking and Pregnancy Don't Mix

Thursday, July 29, 2010

I have a mom's group that I got started in a couple of years ago when I first moved to Ft. Hood.
The group has been great for me and awesome for my kids.
I have met some very great friends through the group and I'm so thankful for that
but there are a few things that are really starting to irk me.
Of course, there are ALWAYS women you don't "like" but you can be civil with because you are an adult, and plus your kiddos like playing with each other so that's great.
And there are ALWAYS things you will disagree on,
school,
potty-training,
discipline,
you name it, some people just won't agree and that's fine.
You learn to agree to disagree.

But there is one topic that just really gets me heated and thats
drinking while you are pregnant.
I'm sorry, but I absolutely disagree with you having a drink while you are pregnant.
I will have to say I even disagree with the occasional glass of red wine.
I know that some pregnant women do this. I'm not saying you shouldn't. But I don't think it's safe or appropriate personally.
There have been absolutely NO STUDIES proving that a glass of wine is "okay" while you are pregnant. Or that one beer is "fine" for the baby and will help you get some sleep.
I mean yikes, if you need a beer to help you sleep, I think you may need to re-think becoming a mother, because sleep is something you will go without for quite a while.
Just think of it as a dear friend you have to move away from :)

I mean there is a thing called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
And there is no way for them to know just how much alcohol will cause your baby to have this.
So for you pregnant mommies out there, please think about it before you have just that one glass of wine..
Is it really worth it?

I'm all for people disagreeing with me: if you decide to comment, let's keep this civil :)

Shame on You!

So have you ever heard of the store Big Lot's?
It's one of my favorites :)
I just love to walk around and find cheap little awesome treasures.
It has AWESOME seasonal products and if you hit it just right you can find amazing deals on scrap booking stuff.
Well a few months back, I went to Big Lot's where my mom lives and we found a few things and as I was checking out I just decided to ask about a military discount
( I rarely ask about this, but at the previous store I had received one so it was on my mind)
The cashier quickly and gruffly told me NO!
Then proceeded to explain to me that "we" as in military do not, and I quote, "deserve" a discount because we receive so many other benefits that regular people don't. She went on and on her rant for a few minutes and I literally stood there speechless!
I didn't say a word to her and just left.
After thinking about it for the afternoon my blood was boiling and I decided to call the manger,
I told her what had happened and she assured me that the situation would be taken care of. I was still mad because she never even apologized.
So, I was still mad and decided to do what every angry girl does! Post it on facebook!
lol
My husband was still deployed at the time, and knowing how I am, a friend's husband, also a soldier, wrote a letter to Big Lot's Corporation:
Here is the letter ( I took out some of the info because it was personal)

Steven S. Fisherman, CEO
Big Lots, Inc.
300 Phillipi Road
Columbus, Ohio 43228-5311

Dear Mr. Fisherman,

First of all, let me express my appreciation for your company and the value it provides my family. The store location on Fort Hood St. in Killeen, TX provides exceptional value on many products to my family and helps us obtain quality goods at great prices. Unfortunately, the purpose of this letter is make you aware of the shocking treatment the wife of a friend of mine received on April 29 at your location on (location taken out) Texas.

Alia Osburn, the wife of my good friend Sergeant (my hubby's name) Osburn who is currently deployed to Afghanistan with the Army, was shopping at your store at the above location in the afternoon of April 29, and when she was checking out she asked for a military discount. Instead of a simple yes or no, she was told by the cashier that the military “doesn’t deserve any discounts because they already get too many benefits that we don’t get.” I don’t believe that the military is entitled to any discounts, however there are many businesses which provide them and therefore it would make sense to at least ask whether the business offered a discount. If your business policy is to not offer a discount, then that is perfectly ok. However, insulting not only the wife of a Soldier who is serving in a combat zone but military personnel in general is simply disgraceful.

I am writing this letter on Mrs. Osburn’s behalf as she is much more reserved than your cashier was. The store manager has been notified of the incident, but I also wanted to ensure that this issue was addressed at the highest level. Again, I appreciate the service you provide the military community here in Killeen and I hope this letter will help prevent such situation from occurring in the future.

Sincerely,

(My friend's name removed)
Staff Sergeant, United States Army

And the reason I am just telling you about this now, he didn't receive anything back.
No generic letter, no anything.
This makes me seriously not want to shop at one of my favorite stores and I wanted to share this because I feel like something more should have been done to right the situation.
So there you are:
SHAME ON YOU BIG LOT'S!
I will not be shopping with you for quite a while!

OSBURN

Friday, July 16, 2010

Because it's 12:00 am I will make this short and sweet, but I couldn't resist posting about it tonight.
I've decided to go gangster.
Yes, You read that right.
I am going to take my navy blue dodge caravan to the shop in the mall that does vinyl lettering and have:

OSBURN
written in old english

So that I can put it on the back windshield.
It will be sweet. Just think of all the whistles and stares I'll get,
and people driving past me will think,
"Man, those Osburn's are a cool family".
And I could coordinate the letters to match the car seats.
Now I may be getting ahead of myself but I also could put:

A huge cutout of the shape of Texas, since that's where I'm from and all.
Everyone must know that a Texas girl is driving this suuuhweet Blue Mini-van or
now I'll call it a swaggin wagon.
And I will put "Texas Cutie" underneath.

Then my children's new nicknames in each bottom corner:

"Al-izzle"

and

"Aubr-izzle"

It's going to look awesome.
I know people will stare in jealousy.

Whats up with BUTTS?
I mean I really don't get the fascination but there is some weird obsession between my 4 year old son and butts.
He currently loves to shake his booty in your face and has a laughing attack after the shaking has gone on.
Then he will constantly scratch himself (you know how boys are) and tells me he just really needs to scratch it like Daddy.
Sweet, like father like son :)
Then he will walk into my bedroom while I'm getting dressed and say things like:
UGH you look disgusting in your underwear!
or
Ugh I can see your little shiny hiny
(because in our house we don't say "butt")
So what's up with this annoying phase..
the booty shaking isn't so bad I actually think its cute, but the rest is just plain annoying :P
What's your pet peeve this week?
