Drinking and Pregnancy Don't Mix

Thursday, July 29, 2010

I have a mom's group that I got started in a couple of years ago when I first moved to Ft. Hood.
The group has been great for me and awesome for my kids.
I have met some very great friends through the group and I'm so thankful for that
but there are a few things that are really starting to irk me.
Of course, there are ALWAYS women you don't "like" but you can be civil with because you are an adult, and plus your kiddos like playing with each other so that's great.
And there are ALWAYS things you will disagree on,
school,
potty-training,
discipline,
you name it, some people just won't agree and that's fine.
You learn to agree to disagree.

But there is one topic that just really gets me heated and thats
drinking while you are pregnant.
I'm sorry, but I absolutely disagree with you having a drink while you are pregnant.
I will have to say I even disagree with the occasional glass of red wine.
I know that some pregnant women do this. I'm not saying you shouldn't. But I don't think it's safe or appropriate personally.
There have been absolutely NO STUDIES proving that a glass of wine is "okay" while you are pregnant. Or that one beer is "fine" for the baby and will help you get some sleep.
I mean yikes, if you need a beer to help you sleep, I think you may need to re-think becoming a mother, because sleep is something you will go without for quite a while.
Just think of it as a dear friend you have to move away from :)

I mean there is a thing called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
And there is no way for them to know just how much alcohol will cause your baby to have this.
So for you pregnant mommies out there, please think about it before you have just that one glass of wine..
Is it really worth it?

I'm all for people disagreeing with me: if you decide to comment, let's keep this civil :)

  1. I totally agree with this... I actually know someone who drank during their pregnancy and now her little girl has fetal alcohol syndrome. It's really sad.

  2. I'm pregnant and I'm not even drinking anything with caffeine, let alone alcohol.

  3. I totally agree! I'm not a big drinker anyway, but I can definitely go 9 months without alcohol.

I have a post-it on my blog from Tuesday about craving beer right now while I'm pregnant... which is just bizarre. I have waited tables & tended bar in the past & have always loathed the smell of beer... but for some reason it is so appealing right now. I haven't had one, though!

  4. I completely agree. It angers me especially when people throw in the excuse of "Well you don't have kids so you don't understand." I'm sorry but I would give ANYTHING to have my babies back on Earth. I also know of one young mother who thought it would be fine until she decided to terminate or not and ended up only having a few drinks at about 6 weeks in. Guess what? Her baby girl is now 5 and has fetal alcohol syndrome and stunted growth. The doctors say she won't ever develop past the mental capacity of a 12 year old.

  5. You go girl! I think this 199% wrong lol ... I think it pathetic when women cannot give up smoking and drinking for 9 mos (or longer depending on if you breastfeed) for your child's health! ABSOLUTELY pathetic.
