Natural vs. Medicated

Tuesday, August 17, 2010

So my best friend Lauren and I were chatting the other day about the birth of my last baby :)
I have really been thinking about doing an all natural water birth. But then when I really think about it I get a little freaked out. I think it would be such an awesome experience, but the thought of me not having ANY meds is such a huge decision and frankly scares me. Lauren had her second baby, 100% naturally and she really thinks it was such an experience. So we got together and put up a Discussion Board on her facebook page to see what other mommies thought about this.

I want to know what you think! I am so torn between the birth center or the hospital. I will have to tell the story of my horrible epidural experience with my first birth for another time, just because I don't have time for that now :)

I do really love what this mom had to say:
I think every mom should get to hear "good for you" and "i have a lot of respect for you" REGARDLESS of if they had a natural, epidural, or C-section.

So true! Having a baby and raising it is such a feat and one that needs to be praised always!
So tell me what your opinion is? And I would LOVE to hear your birth story :)

  1. If my husband and I ever decide to have another baby, I will do it 100% natural. I did a lot of research on natural laboring and birthing and I got so excited! I went through 3 days of labor with my daughter unmedicated. The 3rd day when the contractions were constant I sat in the birthing tub and it was amazing. I loved it! I lost my concentration about an hour before my daughter was born and got the epi... but I still felt everything on my left side LOL I do regret getting the epidural though. If you want to see some pictures of me in the tub, I can e-mail them to you. (There's nothing grody and nothing really showing.)

  2. My first 2 were @ the hospital unmedicated, and Cayleigh-Grace was born at a birth center in a birthing tub. It was by far the best experience of my life.

  3. I watched my sister give birth to both of her kids. One was with an epidural, one was without (although she was crying to for one near the end). As I start thinking about what we want the birth to be like, I definitely would love to go au natural, but I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to do it. Time will tell :)

  4. With my son I was determined to go all natural. After 3 days of no sleep and contractions getting worse I was exhausted. The docs at the base hospital were wanting to induce to make things go faster... and they were pressuring me for the epidural. I caved and got the epi and am so thankful. Afterwards I was told it was very good I got the epidural since they did end up inducing him. Otherwise it would have been another day or more before he was born and I would have been too exhausted to push him out. Without the epidural I probably would have ended up with a c-section.

I was happy with the epidural. Why be in pain if you don't have to be? I was able to sleep the last few hours of labor (the only good sleep I got for several more months).

With my daughter, she was scheduled to be induced and I opted for the epidural at the earliest time so I could rest and enjoy my birthing experience pain free.

Its all a choice. I commend those women who can do it naturally. For me, I prefer no pain.

  5. This is a hard one. I have had 2 natural births and I don't think I can do it again. I was so glad I did it, but it was very hard for me. We will see what happens this time.

  6. I had one emergency c-section and one planned c-section. The second time I went into labor naturally but still had a c-section as in my case vaginal delivery was not safe. Labor was NOTHING like I though it would be!! I kept thinking, "I think I can really do this!!", but it just wasn't in the cards. Maybe it's a grass is always greener thing, but I always regretted not having the "real" childbirth experience.

  7. I have an opinion which you probably read about on my blog, but I really think epidural is the way to go. But everyone is different and can handle things differently. I had a fourth degree tare and I cannot imagine going through that without the epidural...

  8. Hey Lady! Just took a peek at your blog b/c I just saw your new profile pic. CONGRATS! If you want a decent opinion about natural birth AND water birth check out the documentary "The Business of Being Born." It might give you a decent perspective on the water birthing process (I know that I don't have any experience in the area, but you might find it interesting!). You can actually stream it through Netflix if you have it :) I hope all goes well for you and Tim, and again, Congrats!
